Salford Heart Care Bereavement Support Group

Salford Heart Care Bereavement Support Group

v

What we offer

People can self refer by turning up at one of the sessions. Open to adults who would like support living with bereavement (of any kind, including suicide). £1 requested per session to support room hire. Refreshments provided during the session.

The Bereavement Support Group was established in June 2018 and has been meeting on a fortnightly basis at Cadishead Band Room based in Irlam (Locklands Lane, Irlam M44 6RB). Since its inception, membership has grown to 55 people – an excellent result in such a short space of time. Feedback from members has been extremely positive. The group is volunteer-led with facilitation being provided by a professional Counsellor. Members have the opportunity to talk about their grief and share experiences whilst the Counsellor covers a variety of topics such as guilt, suicide and the grief cycle, as well as offering relaxation and meditation sessions.

One to one appointments with the Counsellor, or a qualified placement Counsellor, are offered at each meeting.

Feedback from members reveals that they feel more able to understand their grief and are more confident to talk openly about their feelings. Members have made new friends as a result of attending the sessions and have developed strong social bonds with their peers. We also signpost members to other services and community organisations where appropriate.

One to one support: Therapeutic/Psychoeducational and/or at facilitated ‘closed’ group (provided by qualified practitioners and trained facilitators).

Groups: Self-help. Peer support, remembrance events (organised by voluntary groups and bereaved people as self – help support).

Signposting to sources of support: Information on grief and bereavement by suicide (distributed by local or national organisation).
